Our son will stand on the yellow footprints October 8th, 2012. Does anyone know what battalion he will be in, and what his exact graduation date will be? I know training does not stop for the holidays, but I would like to find out for sure, and his recruiter has not been able to tell us for sure. I think he will be second battalion, but not sure how it rolls over from 2012 to 2013. Thanks!

The boot camp experience can be a daunting one filled with every imaginable emotion. This is true not only for the recruit but for his family and support system as well. Thank you for choosing to support your son while he's at Parris Island. He'll have his platoon mates to help him along the way and we'll be here to do the same for you. If my calculations are correct, recruits arriving the week of October 7th-10th will be in Golf Company. Their graduation date should be Friday, January 4th, 2013. He found that out today. Maybe I should have picked a better screen name. I am much more proud than sad, but this week can't deny that I am sad! He will leave a very large hole in our home when he leaves.

I think when they make other choices, it's sort of a gradual pulling away. A few years at college, saving to get your own place, etc. This is really very quick and was (and is) painful for me. I have to say, people on this board said when I got a letter from him it would be better, and we got one this week, and they are absolutely correct. I feel much better. Keep looking at your mail! (And I don't mean the first letter, the REAL letter from him.)

He is very excited though. We had a long conversation with his recruiter at the station this evening. (Final parent meeting before ship). I continue to be totally impressed by the professionalism of these young men. My son's recruiter has the same MOS as he does. (air-wing mechanic) The enthusiasm in his voice as I asked him questions about the work he has done and will do was not fake. It rubbed off on my son, and he is now looking very forward to his training after boot camp. He had to sign a five year contract due to the length of his training. I think it is a good investment. He will be in First Battalion, Delta Company, graduating on Jan. 4, 2013.

As soon as you hear from your recruit, it will be better. And, I went ahead and wrote to mine BEFORE I got the address, so I could put them all in one envelope and send them once I got it. That helped, too!

Delta is graduating January 18th. Delta Company is in cycle right now until October 12th, 2012, so they wouldn't even have enough time to pick up and do a full cycle and gruaduate January 4th. Tracer's calculations for you are correct, if he is shipping October 8th he is with Golf!

They all had the same graduation date, but two had been given different information on what their company was, and two had no info at all. Oh well, I'm sure the address we were given is not much good until we get a platoon number to put on an envelope anyway. Saying goodbye was not as difficult as we had thought it would be. He worked summers as a Boy Scout camp counselor the last four years, and for some reason this goodbye did not seem all that different, even though it was. I choked up a little the day before, when before I went to work, I just peeked in at him sleeping in the same bed he has been in for the last 15 or 16 years. However, today, when he was cracking us up, and was all excited about going it was very easy. We were just so happy for him that he could start his dream. We just hugged, and he said bye and hopped on the bus to the airport. Sitting by the phone now, waiting for the call from Parris Island.

You have found a place where a lot of parents will be going through the same feelings as you, especially around the holidays.
