My boyfriend of 5 years is currently on week 4 of basic and his standing orders have him leaving 3 days after basic. Has anyone else had this happen to one of their RCT's? We have a 5 year old son, and I have been toying with the idea of following him to MOS in California, we live in New York. Would this be a poor decision? I understand we would barely see him but we definitly would see him more than if we didn't follow him. What would he need at MOS? Do i need to pack him a bag and bring it to graduation for him to take to california?

Posts: 2779 Apr 9 12 9:06 AM Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I would anticipate that his report date will change, unless there is some specific reason that he is skipping his 10 days of leave. Actual orders are issued at the very end of boot camp. Everything else is a "rumor" or "approximation" until then. I personally would not move to his MOS school unless the USMC issues you accompanied orders (meaning they support you being there). It can be very very expensive to either move everything you own across the country, or find a short term furnished place to live. Besides the financial reasons, the USMC has those orders unaccompanied because they expect the Marines to be there fully focused on training and not involved with a family. Sometimes the instructors can be a lot harder on a Marine if they know that the Marine is being distracted by family. There is a saying in the military...."If they wanted you to have a family, they would have issued you one!" That's pretty much how orders go. If they give him accompanied orders, then they are ok with you being there. If they give him unaccompanied orders, then you can expect that they might be annoyed if you show up in the area.

If they don't do you know if i should bring anything for him to take with him from SC to CA? Since he won't be able to go home before he leaves?

If so, he should be reporting to North Carolina for either ITB ( a few months of infantry training) or MCT (one month of non-infantry training before heading to MOS school). Folks who go to CA after boot camp usually went to the Camp Pendleton Boot Camp, not Parris Island.

I have indeed heard of folks being sent to CA instead of NC for that specific MOS. They spend a lot of time in the field training!

He should be able to call home occasionally (maybe once a week). As Jessica stated, they are out in the field away from their phones the majority of time at ITB.
